Why wrap your pilings?

Since the ban of Creosote use as a wood treatment, pilings have become extremely vulnerable to shipworm damage. Shipworms will eat and burrow through pilings until they are too weak to support their load. Once these pilings snap, the outcome will cost thousands of dollars in damage to the dock and/or boat they were supporting.

The Wrapping process

UNderwater INspection

Used to determine whether a piling is still structurally sound.

Growth Removal

Prior to wrapping, we remove all barnacles and oysters until the entire surface of the pole is smooth.

Layer 1: Stretch Wrap

An Industrial grade saran wrap that eradicates all shipworms inside the piling by eliminating their oxygen supply.

Layer 2: Hard wrap

A polyethylene sheeting that protects the stretch wrap and prevents any new shipworms from entering the piling.

Securing the wrap

To secure the wrap we use 1-1/4” stainless steel ring shank nails with approximately 2” spacing between each.
